conversations with a 2-year old

Emma's vocabulary is expanding at a tremendous rate.  It's like there are explosions in the linguistic sector of her little brain and words just magically pop out of her mouth in English and Spanish.

To be honest, I've been a little concerned with her speech development.  Compared to other children her age, she seemed to have a slight delay.  I spoke to one of the speech pathologists at school about her and she reassured me that Emma was okay.  She said that children who are learning two languages simultaneously often times experience what would seem like a language delay  as they work through the two languages.  She helped settle my fears and not too long later,  Emma started making amazing strides in language.

Everyday, she surprises us.  For example, last night she informed us she had hiccups, "Emma tiene hipo."

When her hair is in her face, she'll express her frustration, "Mugre pelo" (Don't know a direct translation for  this phrase.  Perhaps, stinkin' hair).  Then, she uses her entire hand to push back a bit of hair out of her face.  Silly.

And, this morning, while she was taking a bath, we had this conversation.
"Mami, no hay champu" (We don't have shampoo.)
"Tienda, mama. Vamos."  (Let's go to the store.)
"Mama no tiene dinero."  (Mommy doesn't have money.)
"Emma si tiene.  Piggy."  (Emma has some in her piggy.)
"Me prestas?"  (Can I borrow some?)
"Nope."

I love our conversations, but perhaps, I love her intonation and her facial expressions a little more.

  1. Wow! I hope Gavin speaks Spanish too! You have to have David start talking to Ivan in Spanish so he can get back in the groove of the language. You know, Emma is only 2yrs older then Gavin.....they may date someday. Lol.
